Regular Boat Maintenance
For most boaties, the journey does not start when the throttles go down. It starts well before then — with the care, servicing and maintenance that happens behind the scenes.
Every boat has a purpose. Some are built for weekend cruising, some for fishing offshore, some for coastal exploring, and others for long-range adventures. But no matter the size, make or model, every vessel needs regular maintenance to stay safe, reliable and performing at its best.
At The Boat Works, we make boat maintenance simple, efficient and professional. With the machinery, sheds, hardstand, in-water service berths and skilled marine trades all in one location, boat owners and captains have everything they need to get the job done properly.
Regular maintenance is more than just a haul-out and a quick clean. It is about protecting your investment, preventing bigger problems down the track and making sure your boat is ready when you are.
The Boat Works General Manager, Shane Subichin, says having the right people in one location makes all the difference.
“For all maintenance work it’s vital to have reliable and skilled trades in the same location, and who are used to working with each other,” Shane said.
“In the case of more complex projects, it’s advisable to appoint a Project Manager to ensure efficiency and the best application of trades to save you time and money.”
The Boat Works is home to more than 100 onsite marine businesses, trades and service providers, covering everything from antifoul, detailing and mechanical servicing to shipwright work, fabrication, painting, electronics, project management and full refits.
For boat owners, that means less running around, better coordination and more confidence that the work is being handled by experienced professionals.
Levi Duncan, Director of Ocean Degree Yacht Services, has been involved in project management for 30 years and has operated at The Boat Works for 12 years.
Levi says owners can usually manage basic works such as detailing, antifoul and engine servicing themselves, but larger maintenance or refit jobs benefit from having an experienced Project Manager involved.
“For anything more complex in terms of maintenance or refit works, we recommend appointing an experienced Project Manager,” Levi said.
“We have a comprehensive in-house team of shipwrights and technicians who work closely with contractors to handle any size project.”
A good Project Manager gives owners one point of contact, helps coordinate trades, keeps the schedule moving, provides clear quotes and progress updates, and helps reduce time out of the water.
The result is a smoother yard period, less stress and your boat back on the water faster.

Why Regular Maintenance Matters
Regular maintenance helps protect your hull, running gear, engines, paintwork, systems and safety equipment. It also helps identify small issues before they become expensive repairs.
A well-maintained boat is safer, performs better, holds its value and gives owners more confidence every time they head out on the water.
Whether it is a routine antifoul, a mechanical service, new anodes, a polish, a paint job, a refit or a full project, planning ahead is key.

Top 10 Haul-Out Tips
Plan ahead
Set up an annual maintenance plan and aim to haul out every 12 to 18 months, depending on your vessel and usage.
Book early
Secure your preferred trades first, then confirm your haul-out date with the yard.
Know your scope of works
Make a list of everything you want checked, serviced, repaired or upgraded while the boat is out of the water.
Consider a Project Manager
For larger or more complex jobs, a Project Manager can coordinate trades, manage timelines and give you peace of mind.
Get clear quotes
Ask for itemised quotes so you can understand the costs, parts, labour and expected timeframes.
Choose the right workspace
Depending on the job, you may need hardstand, a refit shed, mast-suitable shed, in-water service berth or covered workspace.
Start with the lift and clean
Haul-out and pressure washing are the first steps to properly inspect the hull and underwater gear.
Check the essentials
Inspect antifoul condition, anodes, skin fittings, propellers, running gear, shafts, rudders and any visible wear.
Keep communication open
Stay in touch with your trades or Project Manager so you know what is happening and when.
Sign off before relaunch
Review the completed works, note what products were used and diarise your relaunch date as a reminder for your next maintenance cycle.
